I think it’s fair to say something shifted this week in Independence.
Not just an election. Not just new names.
Something deeper.
People showed up — and whether everyone fully realizes it yet or not, a message was sent.
And it wasn’t quiet.
We now have a new mayor. New council members. And with that comes a change in the room… a different energy… and, honestly, a lot of expectation.
Because let’s be real for a minute.
This didn’t come out of nowhere.
For a while now, people have been asking questions.
About big decisions.
About big money.
About projects with huge price tags—and no public vote.
And maybe the biggest question underneath all of it:
Who is actually being heard right now?
This election feels like the first real answer to that.
So what does this mean?
That’s the part we don’t know yet.
New leadership doesn’t automatically mean new direction.
It can… but it doesn’t always.
What it does mean is this:
The people who were just elected are walking into something bigger than a title.
They’re stepping into a moment where people are paying attention.
Where trust has been stretched.
Where patience has worn thin for some.
And where others are still hopeful things can be done differently.
That’s not pressure — that’s responsibility.
Let’s not pretend this was “just another election”
On paper, sure. It looks routine.
But if you’ve been paying attention, you know better.
There’s been growing concern around:
how money is being used
how decisions are being made
and how much the public is actually included in those decisions
You don’t have to agree with every concern to recognize they exist.
And they didn’t suddenly appear on election day.
They’ve been building.
This election just brought them to the surface.
What “Under the Microscope” means
This isn’t about attacking people.
It’s not about being negative.
And it’s definitely not about politics as usual.
It’s about paying attention.
It’s about asking:
What’s actually happening?
Where is the money going?
Who benefits from these decisions?
And are the people of this city truly part of the process?
Because leadership should never operate in the dark.
And honestly… it doesn’t have to.
Where we go from here
The election is over.
Now comes the part that actually matters.
What decisions get made next.
What priorities rise to the top.
And whether the direction of this city starts to reflect the people who live here.
This isn’t about division.
It’s about getting it right.
And making sure that going forward, people feel like they actually have a voice in their own city again.
We’ll be watching.
Not from the sidelines — but closely.
Because Independence matters.
And the people here deserve to understand what’s happening around them.

Why I Started The Independence Standard

This wasn’t something I sat down and planned months in advance.
It came from watching what’s been happening in our city… and realizing something felt off.
Not because there’s no information.
There’s plenty of that.
But clarity? That’s a different story.
There are a lot of decisions being made. A lot of conversations happening. And a lot of things moving quickly behind the scenes.
And if you’re like most people, you don’t have the time to sit through meetings, read through documents, or try to piece it all together.
But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t understand what’s going on.
And it definitely doesn’t mean your voice doesn’t matter.
That’s where this came from.
I’m not here to be the loudest voice in the room.
I’m not here to tell people what to think.
I just want to help bring things into the light a little more.
To ask better questions.
To connect the dots.
And to make sure people in Independence have a clearer picture of what’s actually happening in their city.
Because when people understand what’s going on… they show up differently.
They ask better questions.
They expect more.
And they get involved.
And that matters.
Because this is our city.
And we should understand what’s happening in it.

Coming Soon to The Independence Standard…
🕊️ A Quiet Reflection: Cheri Battrick
We spend a lot of time talking about policies, projects, and elections.
But a community is more than that.
It’s also about faith, perspective, and the values that guide us.
Cheri Battrick is a faith-based writer who shares reflections on personal growth, life experiences, and the role faith plays in shaping both.
Soon, we’ll be introducing a new column that speaks to that.
More to come.
🏛️ HISTORICAL SERIES: Foundations of Independence - Author to be announced
There’s a story behind Independence that didn’t start yesterday.
Long before the current debates and decisions, there were moments that helped define what Independence would become.
Soon, we’ll be introducing a new series focused on that history—where this community has been, what it’s experienced, and what we can learn from it.
Because understanding the past brings clarity to what’s in front of us now.
Written by a contributing author, this series draws from historical research and documented records to provide context, insight, and a deeper look at the foundation of Independence.
Until next time,

Truth. Clarity. Accountability. Faith in Action.
The Independence Standard is a locally focused publication committed to truth, clarity, and accountability.
